Janet Rayner, self-taught artist"I am a self-taught artist. I have learned by reading books, observing the world, having a family and dreaming my wild dreams. I have learned from other artists as well as from people who say that they “can’t draw a straight line.” I have learned by trial and error (and trial and success) working with mediums such as oil paint, pencil, pastel and porcelain. I have labored many years to hone my techniques.

The joy I experience when a piece comes together is extraordinary, making all the work that has led up to it worth the effort!

Since childhood I have had vivid dreams at night and graphic visions in my waking hours. My paintings are the embodiment of these explorations of my psyche. I take pleasure in conveying the power of emotions and dreams through my art.

For nearly 35 years I have chosen surrealistic oil painting as the vehicle for communicating the interplay of my emotions and imagination.

In February 2003 I started experimenting with soft pastels. I found that some of my ideas could be expressed most effectively with pastel painting. I love using the sensual blends that are one of the classic qualities of pastel painting and adding some of the fine detail that has always been a benchmark of my work in oils.

I have chosen motifs which capture a gesture, a moment in time, an expression of inner peace or contemplation as well as continuing my surrealistic work."

Giclée Prints
Giclée (‘ghe-clay’) prints have come a long way since the early 1990’s when the only digital printer capable of producing fine detail using long lasting inks was the Iris ink jet printer. The new fine art digital printers produce crisp detail and rich, intense color for long lasting art reproductions. The giclée print has become the new standard in collectable fine art prints for discerning galleries and collectors.

Pastels
Exploring the art of pastel painting has become a focus of my work since the beginning of 2003. I find excitement in working with the soft, sensuous blends and finely detailed accents of pastel painting. In contrast to my experience with painting in oils, pastel painting feels more spontaneous, lively and free.

With a few exceptions, my work is done from live models or from photographs I have taken myself.

Oils
Conveying the power of emotions and dreams through my oil paintings is my passion. I feel that surrealism is the perfect vehicle for the expression of my visions in a tangible form.

My oils are an exploration of my psyche that integrate life experience and enhance personal growth.
